I’m the award-winning author of Viva, Rose! a children's middle grade novel, and have written in a variety of styles and genres, including literary and mainstream novel-length fiction for adults, screenplay, essay, short story, and nonfiction. My published writing includes articles for national and regional magazines, websites, and newspapers, book reviews, essays for anthologies, newspapers, magazines, and public radio, fiction for children's magazines including Highlights for Children and Cricket, nonfiction bookazines for Source Media Interlink, and a twenty-three-year (and counting) stint as essay columnist for a regional newspaper named the BlueStone Press.
Awards for Viva, Rose! (Holiday House, 2017) include 2017 National Jewish Book Award Finalist for debut fiction, the AJL's 2015 Sydney Taylor Manuscript award as well as a 2018 Sydney Taylor Honor award, and a Western Writers of America 2018 Spur Award finalist award for juvenile fiction. A sequel to Viva, Rose! has been the recipient of PJ Our Way's author incentive award.
Other writing awards include first place in the Highlights for Children Magazine’s annual fiction contest, second in San Francisco PenWomen’s Soul Making essay contest, winner of Just Effing Entertain Me screenplay competition's Best 500 Word Essay contest, quarterfinalist in the Women’s More Magazine/Women in Film /Hollywood Reporter’s screenplay contest, quarterfinalist in the BlueCat screenplay contest. And way, way back when I was a teen, I won a much-prized national third place award for humor in Scholastic's amazing Art & Writing awards. To my honor and delight, I was able to serve as volunteer juror for this award in 2020
